hopefully this does not sound stupid but this is my first harley. i have an 06 fxstsi and i had it serviced about 300 miles ago but have not had much time to ride lately. i was going to ride this evening and checked the oil and it was extremely low, about a 1/4 inch of oil in bottom of tank cold on the kickstand. It has not leaked a drop, is there any way the oil could have leaked internally into the primary or something or should i assume the shop just left it low at service and add oil.. I would have thought i would have checked it right after service but it has been a couple months so i am not sure. the bike only has about 1300 miles on it. any opinions or suggestions would be great.
Its possible, especially if it has been sitting for a while. Start it up and let it idle for a minute or so and recheck your oil. This has happened to me a time or two.
Its very common for Harley's to do that. Its because they use a dry sump system and the oil will often "bleed" down into the crankcase. You should never check or change theoil on a cold engine for that reason.
Once you start it up it will scavenge the oil out of the engine and pump the oil back up into the tank. Once its been runfor a few minutes and warmed up a bityou can shut it down and check the level. If it was filled properly it should be up to normal then.
ok, i started it up and let it idle for a few minutes, cracked the throtte a couple of times and shut it off. now the oil actually looks to be a little over full on the dipstick, about the bottom of filler neck. the oil looks a little bubbly almost but not quite foamy. it does not smell like gas or anything. i have never checked it hot only pre ride cold and it was always to the bottom of filler neck. is this normal? thanks in advance.
All bikes are a little different, but that's about normal. I would be more conserned that it may to be a little over full.
Its not unusual for them to spit some out then, and if that happens it can get to be apain to clean up.
