Default One More Fat Tire Question

OK everyone, I know this subject has been brought up again and again but if you are not tired of it yet here goes one more. I want to put a fat tire kit on my 1996 Softail Custom I have researched it and came up with 2 possibile kits to use first the Heartland 250 Fat Tire Kit comes complete except for wheel and tire for about $3400 second the Doherty Machine Easy 200 conversion kit comes complete for about $2500. Both kits seem easy to install. Now my questions has anyone here used either of these kits ? What was your experience with instalation? Any handeling problems with the 250 versus the 200? Any inside info on either kit as well as before and after or even just after pics would be greatly apprecited. Thanks and ride safe.

1996softail,
I used the Heartland 250 andI am really happy with it. This is the first time Ive heard of the Doherty kit, so I cant give any comments on it. The Heartland kit had everything I was looking for. IMO, the ride difference from the 200 to the 250 wasnt that extreme. I got used to it fairly quickly. Needless to say, I wouldhighly recommendHearland. Good luck with your decision and dont forget the pics.

ttlpakg thanks for the reply your bike looks great. Did you install the kit yourself if so how hard was it? I like the pipes you used I have V&H longshots but I think they won't fit with the 250 did you have to use short pipes or can I reuse them?

You will have to use shorter pipes...the best two kits are the Heartland and the PM, and I have used them all....there is a Heartland kit somebody is trying to sell here on the forum......you might check the classifieds....if it's already gone, I can probably save you some money. Rockerhead who is a member here, is doing a fat tire Heartland kit right now that I sold him.

I have the PM kit and if I had to do it again I would go with the Heartland kit. It's not that the PM kit is crappola or anything, it's the fact that the Heartland kit comes with alot of options in which the PM kits don't.
For instance, the HTLD kit has beefy fender struts that are machined to accept their optional sissy bars or seats, the PM doesn't. To some that might not be a big deal, but if you ride with 2 occasionally, then it will matter. Also, you can get the kits powdercoated as well where the PM kit you can't.....those were just a few quick points, but if you go to Heartlands site, you will so even more options....

1996softail,
Thanks. I had the HD dealer install it for me. You may be able to keep your pipes if you go with the 200 kit. However, I think you will run into issues if you go with a 250 kit and run long pipes.

Thanks guys I am leaning toward the Heartland kit it seems to be one of the most complete 250 kits out for the Price. Shooter64 you said you think someone is selling one on here I looked in the classifieds but only found a 200 kit for a 2006 if you have anymore info I would appreciate it.
