I just finished my 5k mile service on my Fatboy. Changed out engine oil and filter, primary oil, and trans oil and put in synthetic. This part took about 2 hours of the total 5-6 hours and a 6-pack of beer that it took.
Biggest thing I learned was, as expected, the shop manual is invaluable and the proper tools make the job easier.
Proper tools include oil filter wrench of the right size, allen head swivels to include the long reach ones, and the double 90 degree bend closed end wrenches. Being an old car mechanic, I have most of the tools I needed, but the ones I listed are specific to the job and should be added to your toolbox.
Ain't that the truth. Fortunatly, like you I already have most of what I need.
But if I don't have a tool, I go get it. I have been burned too many times in the middle of a job when I didn't.
So now I try to make sure I have everything I need in advance, especiallyany relavant manuals.
How about pictures of the proper items to change the fluids. Not familiar with an Allen head swivel or Double 90 degree bend closed wrench. Also, what size on the wrenches? Are these availabe at Sear's?
U want to make sure that you start that trans drain plug by hand if you can... or use the allen wrench.... cuz those can be very very easy to strip.... and I am not talking about the actual plug.
Getting the tranny drain out is simple. 5/8" on an extension and feel around till you have it. I stick my head under enough to get a feel for where the plug is. IT is getting it back in that is the PITA. Most people hands don't fit in their too well unless they are a midget. Guess I need a little person friend to help with this part. It usually takes 5 times as long to get it back in. But the more I do it the easier it gets. I have never had success getting it back in with the bolt in a socket or an allen head...
same issue here for sure. I finally used a mirror under the bike... that trans plug i messed with i bet a hour. Finally i got my GF to get in there, LOL.. Small hands did the trick !!
