I'm not sure about how it works with the deuce, but with my '07 Softail Standard, the rear axle adjuster bolt had to come out.We didn't have to pull the entire axle. For the Standard, there are new bolts with the kit (which DO NOT fit between the axle and rear caliper). I had to re-use the factory bolts, instead of the shiny new chrome ones that came with the kit.
i installed my axle from the other side. now when i need to remove my wheel or work on the rear i don't have to mess with the pipes. it affects nothing and saves labor...
yeh I do the same thing, the first time I took the rear wheel off w.t.f. so I ask at harley why and would it hurt anything "guess not as long as you torque it" well duh.................
