did you install the cooler yourself? if so how was it? i bought a used 04 fatboy and one of the first things i bought was the cooler. i'm getting close to oil change so i was going to install the cooler then, just in time for winter riding. oh well i'll have it ready for next summer!
nothing to the cooler installation for a harley softail. just installed one on a 2007 heritage. you'll need a 7/16" allen to torque new fitting for adapter plate. i used a set of vice grips to remove original fitting for oil filter. you'll need about 2/3 of a quart to refill. the hardest part was installing the cooler. install adapter plate first. install the two hoses on the cooler, then mount cooler to the frame. then slip the two hoses on the adapter plate.
I agree. I had one on my Wide Glide and the oil temp in the tank never got over 175. During normal riding the temp stayed at 150. I rode that bike for 19 years with no problems. I have a oil cooler on order for my Rocker now. I would have had it installed on delivery, but they weren't available yet. Even though synthetic oils perform better in the heat, I still like the idea of running the oil at lower temperatures.

All my HD's run Oil coolers, to me its a necessity. Lowering oil temps means a cooler running engine. A cooler running engine means the oil will hold up longer and protect better. If you got the money to spend for it, get one, its cheap insurance.
