Default Help! Trans fluid is pink-ish...

I'm in the process of changing the trans fluid and when I went to pick up the replacement fluids at the dealer the tech said I could use the Amsoil product (synthetic, 20w/50) that says it's for engines, transmissions and primaries. Now keep in mind I'm buying this product at the dealer, so I take the guy at his word. I did use the Amsoil product in the primary.

This is the first time I'm changing the trans fluid and didn't realize that the existing fluid was pink or what that represents, if anything...it certainly doesn't look like 20-24 oz (which the manual states I should put back in) came out of the trans...okay, maybe I was a little low.

Anybody see any problems with me adding the Amsoil synthetic in with whatever the pink stuff was that was in the trans case previously? Keep in mind I bought this bike used (~6700 mi) from an HD dealer, I have no idea if the previous owner was having his services done by the dealer or an indy (or he did it himself)....any input would be appreciated. I'm holding off refilling the case for now, I'll just finish draining the old and button it back up until I'm sure I should proceed! Thanks,

I'm not surewhat other trans oil may be pink, but the Redline shockproof I put in my transmission looked (and coated) like pepto bismol. Maybe that's what the previous owner filled it with. Either way, if you're worried you might be overfilling, just check the level according to your manual's guidlines and you should be golden.

Mother - you are exactly right, Pepto Bismol is a much better way to describe it!

I'm not worried about overfilling it so much as I am mixing the Pepto stuff with the Amsoil stuff! So you don't think there's an issue mixing the two, then? Thanks again for your input, especially the quick response. [8D]

Well, I'm no expert on mixing different oils, so maybe someone else can chime in on that. I really wouldn't think there would be any problem though. I do remember being amazed at how much the redline fluid stuck to the inside of the funnel when I was filling mine up, but I'd bet they'd still mix just fine.

Use Amsoil Severe Gear oil in the tranny....75/90, 75/110 or 75/140. I Have used all three and now use the 75/140. Less clunking and runs great. Use 20/50 in the engine and the primary and don't worry about what was in before. Just get as much out of the tranny as possible and refill with the severe gear oil. The next change will get it all out with no ill effect!

I use Amsoil 20/50 in the engine, Bel Rey gear saver 75/140 in the trans and Motor Factory in the chain.

I've run Amsoil 75/90 and HD syn3 20/50 in the tranny and didn't really notice a difference in shifting performance. That being said, I may have felt more comfortable with the heavier gear lube, becausethat's what I'm used to with all my other vehicles.

Thanks for the inputs, guys...I'm gonna run the Amsoil 20w/50 through it for a period to flush out the Pepto crap (what's left of it after I drained it) then drain it again and switch to the Amsoil severe gear oil as suggested. My trans was clunking before I changed the fluid and I'll get it changed to the severe before I head to Daytona in March.

You might want to research some other opinions about Redline Shockproof Heavy before you simply write it off.
