Default New Springer - first service?

I just took delivery of an '06 FXSTSI and love it so far. The dealer told me to do the first service at 1000 mi. - the owner's manual says 500 for the Springer so I'm assuming that there's a fork adjustment at 500. I'm guessing go with the manual and bring it in at 500 - then what? Should I do another oil change at 1000?

Any advice or comments would be appreciated as I'm new to HD's (my last bike was, and still is, a Ducati).

The dealer told me that the 500 mile service was to check/adjust the lower bushings
on the springer front end and that was all they do till 1000 miles.

Hey FloridaRider -
I heard the same as BarryGreen ... They will just inspect/service your front end (unless you have something else on your list of "things that aren't quite right"). Regular service will start at 1000 and then every 2500. Did you get the EXTENDED SERVICE PLAN?? I did.

Where you from? I'm in Orlando (Windermere, actually)

I'm in Palm Harbor, just North of Clearwater.

I did get the extended service plan, it seems like a solid plan and worth the money. I bought the bike last Thursday. I went to check out a dealer in St. Pete - Jim's HD - and they happened to have the model I wanted on the floor. Three hours later I rode it home. 200 miles into it and I'm loving the bike. This is my first cruiser - I have very limited experience with bikes over 400 pounds, so I was a little intimidated at first. My first u-turn was a little hairy. I got used to it very quickly, though. I love the laid back position and the bike really seems to fit me well. I didn't buy any accessories yet, but I'm sure I'll be making some changes.

How are the roads in the Orlando area? Ifr it weren't for I-4, I'd spend more time in Orlando.

Congrats on getting the new Springer. When I got mine last year, I just followed the manual but I wasn't afraid to ask the shop tech any question that I could think of. They are usually pretty helpfull with new people. Worked for me

I went til 1000 then 5000 now another 1500 til 10,000 all in less than a year. Might not be by the book but my dealer told me to do it that way......now if I had felt something strange or heard something....but knock on wood I'm riding it every chance I get without any major probs!

I went to the dealer after I got my springer and they recommended 800 to 1000 to bring it in for service. That being said make sure that you check the mounting nuts on that front fender.I had one come loose while i was out riding one day.Since I was litterally on my way to the dealer I had them check it out and tighten it up.This is were the problem comes in.The tech or a$$hole that did it did not torque it to spec and since that is actually a pivot point this is crucial.I now have a custom painted fender that has damaged paint and stud broken off in the forks. Looks kind of cool w/no fender though, for now.

Thanks for all the info. I'm loving the bike so far - ride it every chance I get. I started the mods out slow with a set of axle nuts - not a big deal, but they clean up the front end a bit.

I'll probably take it in close to 500 miles anyway to have a few items installed - they can do the adjustments then. I'm thinking of the SE slip ons and a Stage 1 kit. Also - detachable saddlebags as I'd use the bike more with a little storage.

I can feel the obsession coming on....

Just a thought.... You may want to do a oil and filter change at the 500 mile mark when its at the dealer. The first couple of oil changes are particularily important as this is the time all those nasty little metal bits are trying to be picked up by your oil filter. Another oil and filter change at the 1000 mile mark. You cant change your oil and filter too often during the breakin period. Just my two cents.
