I looked on Harley's page for the old style oil cooler. Looks as though it has been discontinued for the softail models. The dyna and touring coolers still mount lower, but the softail one is on the downtubes.
I am wondering if anyone ever had any experience with them. They look ok, but air flow looks like it might cause a problem.
I can ask them at the dealer. I can always go aftermarket for one, but I'd rather do that as a Harley part. South Florida, you kind of
need one during the summer months.
I'd hold off on the oil cooler for a while. Get a Stage 1 done first (exhaust, air cleaner, fuel management system). You'll be surprised how much that actually cools down the bike. The only time you'll notice the bike start to get hot, is when you're in stop-and-go traffic or sittin' for long periods of time with the bike runnin'. In situations like that, the oil cooler won't help you any. The oil cooler only helps if the bike is moving. And if the bike is moving, and you have a Stage 1 done, the heat will be fine.
OK, thanx. Thing is, I actually like the sound of the stock pipes. The only problem with them is, the heat shields don't cover the back side, and you can see where the pipes are blued on the inside in the reflection ( ugh ) and it kind of bugs me.
I like the Vance and Hines pipes, the short shots, but I don't want to take a performance hit.So I am kind of stuck on what to do as far as the exhaust is concerned. Are there any other pipes other than stock and slip ons that retain the crossover, or am I looking at a 2-1 pipe as the best option? I like the quietness with the nice sound of the stockers, and am really surprised it doesn't sound like a sewing machine with the stockers anymore.
Note: When you are idleing, an oil cooler WILL still dissapate heat. As the oil goes through it heat radiates out of the surface area of the fins just as it does on the engine fins. This gives you more surface area to disipate the heat.
I installed one on my 07 FXSTC . The are two models that will fit the upper one and the lower/ The lower one is set at 215 degrees and the upper at 185. I got the lower one. At 07 Daytona bike week the traffic was almost stopped. My gauage never went over 215. I have the lower unit.
Yeah, the lower was good, but I don't think they make it anymore. Can't find it in the online catalog. I liked it better because all the other oil lines on the bike are chrome but the oil cooler lines are rubber. Plus, it looks as though it'll block airflow to the front cylinder.
Great thread! I rode Hondas 20-25 years ago. Gave it up for family until last summer. Went to the local H-D dealer and sat on some bikes. It was a done deal after that. I did some test rides, the first was on a used Wide Glide, the first Harley I ever rode. I could not get this huge grin off my face during theentire ride, or for the rest of the day for that matter. A few more test rides and I fell for the 2008 Softail Custom. Put 3500 miles on it in 3 months, loving every minute of it. Sweet ride!
I know this is an ancient thread but I just bought my first Harley, a pre-owned 08 FXSTC, a couple of weeks ago and was wondering how you feel about yours three years later? When I started thinking about getting a bike a few years ago, the Softail Custom was exactly what I envisioned. After reading the various forums and visiting the dealership a bunch of times, I found myself bouncing around on what to buy and came real close to buying a Road King and then finally realized I would have a major case of buyer's remorse if I didn't snap up this mint condition Custom. So far, I am thrilled to death although I haven't put in too many miles as I am a new rider. So, should I expect to have years of good times on my new prized possession? Thanks.
The custom is great bike. I bought my 08 last year with low mileage. It was a repo and was in great shape. I ride every day to work then take the long way home.
Hey BayAreaRider, I bought my '07 Custom in April of this year and I have put almost 5,000 miles on it so far. I love it. A great, classic motorcycle look in my opinion. Welcome to the forum.
I now have 95,000 miles on mu 07 and love it. Great power and good handling. Just came back from a 2500 mile ride and other than bad gas it was a great time.
