anybody else replace their rusted or tired looking bolts with stainless steel ones ? they look great ,not sure why everybody doesnt do this, they wont rust out and pit like chrome..is there a down fall that im unaware of ?
I'm in the long term project of doing that. But you do need to know that all SS bolts are not created equally. Most of the common bolts you can get in the the local hardware store or chain store are a bit too soft or not graded high enough for many places on a Harley.
You also have to deal with the fact that where they go into aluminum there is the possibility for them toenhance corrosion in the aluminum due to they differing electrical properties. I forget the technical term for it.
But using good high grade bolts (not cheap) and a little lock-tite or anti-sieze can reduce or eliminatethe effects.
So if your looking to do it, have at it. But make sure you get good grade (high strength grade 5 and 8 SS fasteners) from a reputable source and you shouldn't have a problem.
Here's a couple of places to get them that sell the right grade and they are already polished.
But be prepaired for the price, nothing good is ever cheap.
I did my bike in chrome bolts from Gardner Westcott. They sell them in complete kits also in SS. The polished chrome kit for engine/trans was $225 a very complete kit including case bolts and motor mounts.
