Why do people do this?
This isn't just about Fatboys, is it?
It's about any one of the stripped down offerings, that are designed to be changed.
Harley's P&A range, and the entire after market parts industries depend on owners wanting to change things.
The 'why' is surely to do with peoples' expectations, and the reality of ownership, that kicks in once you start to use it.
I bought an FXST because it had the look I wanted; could just as easily have been a Fatboy, but...
Then it needed a sissy bar, so my wife stayed on, then it needed a windshield, because (well if you lived in Scotland you wouldn't have to ask), and then it needed bags, because we actually wanted to go somewhere on it, and a luggage rack, and then a Leathermen seat, because we wanted to go further, and now it's sort of like a Heritage, with FX forks and a bobtail, but I've now gone off the 21" wheel which was one of the main reasons I bought it, and restringing it as a 16" is just around the corner, and then it'll need a 16" fender (Fatboy?) and where do you stop.....????
Still cost a lot less than a Heritage as well, and it's my choice of parts, not someone else's.
Buy a Heritage, and it's someone's interpretation of what a Harley should be like.
Do it yourself, and it's yours...

And to think that the only real riders bike made is a Sporty, 50 years and counting. Everything added for travel and comfort brings it closer to a cage.
J/K guys! It is a matter of choice is it? Just think what it would cost if everyone wanted the same look. If we all liked the same thing that one woman would sure be catching H***!
