Default Softail Rocker breakin

I should be getting my bike in a few weeks and I've been going to different dealers asking different service people for breakin advice. As you can imagine I've been getting different advice. I guess this question is really for all of you who have already got Rockers. What have you been toldare the correct breakin procedures for the Rocker? This is the first new bike I've had in 35 years and I want to do it right. Thanks

What, you think the Rocker has a special engine or something? When you get the bike, it will come with the manual. Although it's not the best method of breakin, it will be good enough to do the job. Unless you really know engines it is the safer approach for the masses, just takes longer.

Engines have come along ways...justdrive it normal...no doggin' it or WOT...just normal. Once you hit 500 miles, you should be okay.

I have 200 miles on my xbones and 16000 on my 05 sporty I traded in, I follow the HD recomendations pretty close, figure it's there 2 year warentee and their reputation and after 105 years they most likely know what they are talking about.

Well rbabos, sounds like you have a different opinion than the one I'll find in manual. Mind sharing it with me? Thanks

Congrats on getting your new bike. I'm sure you will love it. As far as break in time goes T-Robb is dead on the money. The only concern I would have and I have noticed it hasn't been asked is if you had any mods done to the engine before delivery. Some people do the stage 1 upgrade or pipes, intake etc.. right out of the dealer. If you did then I would ask the tech if there is anything special you should know before your first service interval. if not then as said before, easy does it and use all your gears for the first 500 then ride free.
Leon.

Don't baby your engine - the idea is to make the rings work hard so that they wear down the microscopic honing pattern in the cylinder walls and therefore seat properly. If you baby your engine, the rings won't seat properly and the honing pattern will be gone and you will forever burn oil. Ride the bike hard - don't lug, don't exceed 4000 rpm and change up and down gears so that the rings expand which makes 'em work against the cylinder wall. You only have one chance to do it.I reckon the first 50 miles is the most important. After that, changing engine oil is about the best thing you can do - do it after 100 miles.... then follow HD recommendation.
