I'm looking for some recommendations for a mini or micro-mini analog tachometer for my Heritage. I have stock handlebars and the stock kingsize windshield WITH a windshield bag that I am not willing to give up...hence the reason the tach needs to be small in order to fit on the bars with the bag. I am totally clueless on what to look for in a decent tach. I also have no idea what single/dual fire ignition means. [&:] ANY help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!
I installed one of the Custom Chrome mini-tachs in my machine, like yours it has a windshield bag that I did not want to give up. The tach works fine, but it was a royal pain to install. You have to do the wiring yourself, and a wiring schematic of your bike is a must.
I took power for the tach and the tach light from the orange/white wire in the speedometer harness, used the black wire in there for the tach and light ground, and ran a wire under the fuel tank back to the ECM connector for the tach signal. Pin 3 on the ECM connector is a tach signal. You will have to buy and install a pin soscket into the connector. This cost $1 at dealer, but you have to take the connector apart and put it back together to put it in.
Here's a photo of the final result, except I have since moved the tach to the right side because the clutch cable got in the way.
Very nice, Tommy...exactly what I'm looking for. Would you happen to have the Custom Chrome part # for that tach? I think there are a few of them from CC. Also...is the Heritage a single or dual fire ignition? Apparently, that's something I need to know when buying a tach...and I haven't a clue. Thanks!!
Linda:
I don't have the Custom Chrome part number, it was on the box and that is gone. But I did find what appears to be the same tach in the J&P catalog, their part number is 5600076 under the custom mini gauges. Cost from them is $60.
There are probably others you can get as well from other vendors.
You have a dual-fire machine. Single fire means the spark plug sparks only at the top of the compression stroke. Dual fire means it fires at both tops, the compression and the exhaust. Of course, sparking the plug on the exhuast doesn't do a thing. It is easier to set up an engine with few cylinders with dual fire, you do not need a two to one gear reduction from the engine crank to the rotor or spark sensor.
I think your machine will have a pink wire in the speedometer wiring cable cluster under the speedo. If it is there, it will be folded back and hidden under the black plastic wrapping. You should be able to use that for a signal as well. Mine did not have it.
