TNharley, you're right of cource. Windsheilds do make a single bike more versatile. In fact I'll be riding down your way next month with a buddy on the way to Deals Gap and I will have my windsheild on, but it's been chopped so I don't have to look through it.
If I were rich enough to have a bobber and a glide, I believe I would opt for the glide on any 200 mile day trip, even though thats not that far. I wish I did have a glide or maybe a RK. You're lucky.

Marsh, I disagree with most of what you said..."Dork it up?"... I have a touring bike, the best, a 100th Anniversary Ultra, which I use for the long trips and overnighters with I need to carry stuff. I bought the XBones for a fun to ride, sport touring bike, not to go 2 miles to a restaurant/bar and then 2 more miles to another restaurant/bar. If all you get a bike for is to ride to eat or drink and be seen, then that is poser in my opinion. I want to ride the XBones to the mountains, ride the curves, take many 200 mile day trips. Getting there is a lot of 55-75 mph travel and frankly with the mini-apes making the rider sit high and upright the body becomes a huge kite and by the time you get to your destination you are worn out. Now if I want to just go down to the local Friday night biker acitivites or out to eat, then the windshield can be removed in about 1 minute or less. In my opinion, that gives the owner flexibility.
Not speaking for Marsh, but I think hewas talking cosmetic reasons, same as I was...what looks good on a touring bike looks out of place on some other bikes...and thatIS just a matter of personal opinion...

Butonce againI'm hearing "you can't ride distance without a windshield", and "only posers and bar hoppers don't use windshields"...

I have a windshield that was "gifted" to me 3 bikes ago...used a couple of times and it's been hanging in the garage for years now, because it's just not my style of riding...200 mile day trips? I'm retired and that'san average ridefor me most of the time, and even tho I don't keep the road hot like I used to, I avg 10 to 12K a season...my Train is no poser bar hopper...and I'll be 59 in a few months, so age has nothing to do with it...

And BTW, my best friend has a new Street Glide and we swapped bikes the other day just for the hell of it...after an afternoon of the wind beating and jerking the windshield and the fairing around, my *** was wore out, and I was more than ready to get back on my Train...my friend had a ball, and said if he could lose a few lbs, he'd steal my bike...

Just sayin...

Marsh and Nightrain, you both have good points and it really comes down to personal opinion. Where I got the bar hopper from was Marsh's statement: "Why did you buy a hot little bar hopper and then wimp it down?". I took the XBones up to Deals Gap and the Cherohala Skyway before I put the windshield or saddlebags on it ( a 200+ mile trip) and the wind buffeting and wind noise getting there and back wore me out. Also starting out with it cool and knowing that it was going to heat up, I underdressed and really got uncomfortably cold on the morning ride to Deals Gap, but then in the afternoon I got uncomfortably too hot. The combination of the windshield and bags would have made that day trip so much more comfortable than it ended up being. I was very happy to finally get home. Frankly once I got the windshield and bags on the XBones, I like the look very much and probably will leave them on all the time. Jerry

I also have the windshield (the chopped 9"), it makes a lot of difference when riding at highway speeds. i dont care if you have a tour bike or bobber, and i have had both. on a long or even not so long ride the windshield helps. as far as aesthetic looks, i do not think it takes away too much from the overall look. my shield is detachable so if i were to be tooling around town i could remove it. but i do alot of highway driving at 70+++ mphs and i need it. NOT TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT but i got whacked in the face with a bug this morning on the way to work. man, i have the biggest welt just next to my nose, hurt like a mother.(even TN's 12 inch shield would not have stopped this thing)

Do you get a lot of buffeting with that shield?

i have the low profile shield, and get plenty of relief from the wind. i have the smoked lens, which i think looks better. also, the low profile has a better look to it than the larger standard one, which i feel is too big. i think the difference is holding on without a shield, or enjoying the ride with one. having the QD makes it a no brainer for just bustin around town without it. i don't worry about looks anymore, just what my mood is on riding that day.

Marsh,

"would you go out and buy a Electra Glide and turn it into a bobber? We would have to ask you why you bought a touring bike to make it a bobber. If you wanted a touring bike, why didn't you buy any of the fine touring/cruising models Harley makes? ie; a Heritage, Deluxe, Street Glide, Fat Boyor Road King? Why did you buy a hot little bar hopper and then wimp it down? See what I'm trying to say?

You are kidding, right?
You call a 96 cubic inch fuel injected six speed that weighs over 700 lbs. a little bar hopper? If you wanted a little bar hopper there are a lot better choices.
This bike is able to do a lot, I also have a detatchable windshield and would not do a road trip without it. I also recall seeing many old post ww11 bobbers with windshields, for me it looks ok.

Everybody like there bike to be different. There is NO right or wrong. As long as the owner likes it ----- That is all that matters : But most times i ride my Heritage with the windshield off.
And it looks awesome too! But you're right. It'shis Cross Bones. He has a perfect right to dork it up. But enquiring minds want to know; whyhe bought a bobber, if he wanted a cruiser/tourer?

Take this with a grain of salt. ,,,,,, but why did you buy a Heritage if you wanted a Deluxe? I'm seeing a red Heritage with no bags, no windshield, whitewalls, and beach cruiser type bars, to name a few, looks like a Deluxe to me.

To each their own.

Thats a valid point. [sm=bustedsign.gif]Actually I like Deluxe's a lot. I should take a picture of mine with my chopped windsheild and my saddle bags , maybe put on my pillion seat and sissy bar for good measure. I'm planning a two up trip with the ball & chain this weekend so maybe I'll take a pic this week. It just takes a few minutes to convert every thing. Sort of a best of both worlds for me.
I'm not trying to get on anyone's case, just stimulate discussion.
