I originally posted this in the Softail forum:

20 Minute Lay Down Plate....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well...I got in a couple hours on the bike yesterday before the storms hit...get home and say to myself... what can I do to the bike today.... the most obvious thing was getting rid of the stand-up license plate holder.... so off it came....

Parts you'll need:

2 1/4 x 1" cap screws
2 1/4 x 1/2 cap screws
4 1/4 nylock nuts
2 5/16 x 1 1/4" bolts
2 5/16 nylock nuts
2 rubber gromets, about 1/2 inch wide, for bottom 1" screws
Washers to suit.....

Remove the plate holder from the bike (3 9/16 nuts above the brake light, easily accessible on the Fat Boy Lo, YMMV)

Set aside the perpendicular post for a later, non motorcycle project. With a heat gun and putty knife remove the bottom reflector. Clean up the goo with Goo Gone. Stick the holder in a vice and start clamping, I bent mine to approx. 30 degrees. Turn the holder around and using the existing holes as a pilot, drill through the holder (where the reflector had been). Using your license plate as a template, drill 2 new bottom holes approx 1/2" lower than the existing slots for the plate. This allows the plate to cover the now exposed 5/16 bolt heads. Debur the holes and assemble back on bike. The rubber grommets will go behind the plate as spacers when covering the exposed 5/16 bolts......poor man's lay down....

Thank you.

I have a drawer full of USB cables of every type including some retractable ones... I keep one of those to recharge my scala headset when I hang my helmet on the handlebar.

Hello All,

Does anyone have any info about reshaping the stock seat on a 2010 Fatboy? I have just taken delivery of my bike and I am looking at all options re my seat, as I reckon it sits me too high! I would love to sit "into" my seat and not on it - if you know what I mean?

Cheers
-J

I did it to mine, more for comfort and back support. You'll just have to cut the flanges deeper where the legs drop off than I did:

Everyone who (I allow to) sits on it is surprised at how comfy it is. I even quit wearing my old weight belt around the kidneys on trips. Now have a homemade bead pad that is made of 1/4" pony beads from wallyworld that helps it breathe. Done.

What I wonder if I am able to pick up the foam inner to save me from chopping up the original in case I stuff it up? Hmm....

Depends on your skill level I guess. I put on some boxer shorts and shaved a little, sat on it, then shaved again, until it cupped my rosy red cheeks. I left the leg drop high because I spend my time riding rather than sitting at lights, and I wanted as much form fit as I could get.

The ole' Bad Boy came with the solid silver/gray wheel and gray pulley, always hated it and was just ok with the spoke rear wheel. So grab a rattle can, masking tape and some sand paper and go to work. Nothing major but $10 and time makes a world of difference.

Then sat on the bike and realized the riser bolts were gray, how can it take this long to notice something like that? Rattle can away!! Is the Crossbones the same?
