Default 1K Service - Not Impressed

Well this is my first HD so I am new to the whole service process. Love the bike by the way. I just had the service done at a local dealer (pricey) and brought my own Amsoil MCV which was not a big deal. They do not seem to frown on customers bringing in the non HD oil. I am guessing it is common. Anyway I think we all know that all FLSTFs come with the chrome filter. Well they decided that I wanted the fugly black filter....arrgghh!! It is just not the same without the chrome there. Of course the problem is replacing the filter, purges some of the oil. They offered to do it on the spot, but this would entai mixing the Syn3 with the Amsoil which was not desirable. Now they get to change my oil again with Amsoil they will purchase and install the chrome oil filter tomorrow. I guess I need to verify they actually did get the oil. The other thing that does not impress me is the invoice for the work. They replaced a few gaskets etc which was captured, and mentioned the 1K service, but there is no itemized description of what was actually done. It could be a pencil whip excersize, but at least I have a detailed summary of what was actually done. I get this with my $30 Honda van oil change. Is this the HD standard?? I do not think I am being too picky here?
I guess this is a small vent, but I am curious what others have experienced. Also purchased the service manual and plan on wrenching all the preventive maintenance stuff myself in the future.
Thanks for any feedback.

everything I've ever bought from a dealership, I've gotten a very detailed printout. I haven't let them do any services on my bike.I found a independent mechanic I trust, to do my services. I got the oil, gaskets, CHROME oil filter and plugs myself from the dealer for under $45.00 and the indy's charge was under $150.

I can appreciate those that do their own wrenching - I don't. I did enough of that when I was working.... today, I'll pay someone to get their hands dirty.

Just had the 1K done to my FXCWC Rocker C.They didn't itemize all that is done, the owners manual does.
All fluid levels are R/R, R/R oil filter, Tensions checked on drive train complete, all fasteners that might vibrate loose are check for proper ttightness, all lube points done, Final drive belt tensions is adjusted. Misc stuff like tire air pressure, Head bolt tightness and such are checked, adjusted as required.

Has anyone else had any oil weepage from the cylinder bases to lower cases? Not enough to scream about andHD delership will monitor it.Quite frankly it isn't enough to concern me at this time (nor the HD techs). They cleaned area andI am also watching it. Apparently the 96ci has oil ring between jugs and case, 88B has afull gasket.Although an oil ring should not leak, it is not a gasket and some weepage is understandable. Not a desirable thing and from a cost standpoint machining and oil ring groove compaired to a flat gasket surface costs a lot more.

Hope this helps azfathog17

i noticed mine weeping when i first got it i took it in they looked at it said it wasnt leaking. I was having oil blowing out the heavy breather and that might have been dripping down in that spot.. well not blowing oil anymore they changed o rings in the mounting bracket and that stopped it. Im keeping my eye on the weeping still though.

My dealership asked me the first time what kind of fluids and filter I wanted andentered my preferences in the computer. Now they just ask me if I want the usual. I always get a detailed printout.

You will only get an itemized list of the parts they used and so many hours labor at a certain rate. The owners manual tells you what is supposed to be done at each service interval. At the 1K they should have changed the fluids in all three crankcases, checked the torque of all critical fasteners, adjusted the rear drive belt, and checked/lubed the head bearings and road tested the bike. They usually print out a checklist for the mechanic to go by and check things off as he performs them, but usually the customer doesn't get a copy unless you ask for it. Also, it is good to estimate the number of hours it should have taken and see if they actually spent that much time. Another person on the forum took his XBones in for the 500 mile service, which is required on the Springers and is in place of the 1K. His service tech just changed the oil and charged him $89, which obviously meant that they didn't do what was required. Doesn't hurt to ask questions. I have always had the dealer perform the first service, and then have always done my own for the other intervals. There is nothing rocket science about it if you buy the service manual it tells everything you need to do, or buy the Fix-my-HOG DVD for your model and it has a mechanic take you thru every aspect of the service. My opinion, is if you want it done right, do it yourself.

I learned from the first Harley i bought to ask and get a free 1k then after that I do my own service and only pay the dealer for things like the head bearings adjust and it was just $33.

This thread is the reason I do all of my own service, including the 1k. For the price a dealer charges, you can buy a service manual and even a good amount of the tools needed if you don't own any tools. An 8th grader can read the service manual and do the work required for a 1k.

Yes Dealership services are expensive, but if they are acutally doing your service it does in deed take about 2.5-3 hours to do. So depending on the labor rate it can be very pricey. A good mechanic is a valuable thing !!

Thanks for the info. Perhaps I set my expectations too high?? In general I am a bit of a skeptic when it comes to service shops in general from some previous bad experiance. I try to do most of the maintenance myself on my vehicles. I figured it would benefit having the first service on the fatty done at the dealer. They charge for 3hrs of labor. I have to assume it was all done by the book. The filter is annoying, it was not the mechanic, but the service advisor giving the wrong info. Oh well....move on.
