Thanks for the info. Perhaps I set my expectations too high?? In general I am a bit of a skeptic when it comes to service shops in general from some previous bad experiance. I try to do most of the maintenance myself on my vehicles. I figured it would benefit having the first service on the fatty done at the dealer. They charge for 3hrs of labor. I have to assume it was all done by the book. The filter is annoying, it was not the mechanic, but the service advisor giving the wrong info. Oh well....move on.
yeah... i cant believe they were going to let your 1k service go out the door without a chrome oil filter on your 08 flstf either... i'd find a different dealer for that reason. if they were trying to safe a ridiculous dollar on the oil filter, who knows what else...

My '08 has never been wrenched by a dealership since I rode off with the odometer showing 1.x miles. I am now coming up on 11,000 miles, on my second set of tires, and always replacing plugs, and synthetic oils each time to my indy. Now I'm doing the liquid changes and plugs.

Nobody is going to take care of your bike like you will. The service manuals are excellent after reading through them a few times. My acquired tools are inproving; still looking for a decent torque wrench set-up and a greese fitting that bends enough to attach to my steering head.

As everyone says here, nothing like building your confidence and pride by doing it yourself.

Harbor Freight torque wrenches are good. Talked to a guy in a calibration lab that told me they were as good or better than Craftsman.

Just change your grease fitting to the correct angle that you need. You can get one at an auto parts store for about 50 cents.

i just wonder do they do everything on the maintenance list or cut corners.
i work on cars (my job) and i see the short cuts some guys i work with take just to save some time and make some money(flat rate scale). me i prefer to take my time and get it right, i'm very meticulous when working on someone else's car. and i'm just as meticulous when working on my own car or bike. it all has to be done to my standards or its just not good enough. personally i think they do take short cuts...i doubt that they check the torque on every bolt.

I went back to the dealer for the follow up filter swap. They promptly replaced it with the chrome one and topped of the Amsoil that came out when the filter was pulled. They alsogave me the remaining oil. I now have a piece of paper that says 1k service performed at the dealer. Was it worth it?I guess I am indifferent about itnow.

Do not buy an HF torque wrench...they are garbage. I almost stripped camshaft cover bolts on my Yamaha ATV using one of them. I use Craftsman, and would not use anything of less quality, especially on this bike.

What's a good size torque wrench? In the service manual I see a wide range of torque specs. Is there one wrench to cover most of these, or do I need more than 1 wrench? Thanks.

Even though I was a Kaw-Suz mech back in the 70-80's, I let the dealer do the 1000 mile service just to cover myself for the warranty and that this was my first H-D. If the mech is doing his job he should check everything listed in the owners manual and to back up what was done when the bike was prepped. The first oil change is important because all the parts are mating at that point and the motor will tend to run a little warmer until it's broken in. The clutch needed to be adjusted on my bike and the service manager gave a run down on what they did.

THAT'S **** POOR. END OF STORY.

I just went to my stealership today and had it out with the Service Manager. I believe in MAKING them stand behind who they are and what they do. A freakin BLACK oil filter on a Fatboy? WTF? Don't take any crap from them and don't be afraid to **** them off either. Someone at that dealership cares how you get treated and will handle the situation. Just be prepared to take it to them. In my experience, The lower level guys at the stealerships are like the bullies in school. They will f&*k with you only untill you punch back. My pennies......
