OK I think I have finnaly spent enough on making the bike shine and look nice. Now I need to work on performace upgrades. I would like to keep the same engine just get the most out it. Any recommendations?

 

You may want to consider gear driven cams. I got the S&S 510 cams and there was a significant "seat-of-the-pants" increase in horsepower. There are even better cams out there for low end torque or high end HP - depends on what you are looking for.

 

But if I put in High Performance Cam do I need to change anything else? Push rods, valves, ect??

 

Depends. Many cams are "plug and play"! The S&S 510G cams I installed are plug and play (able to use my stock valves and springs). I just had to get adjustable pushrods to make the install easier. Some of the hotter cams like the S&S 575 will require and upgraded valve train. Andrews also makes good cams many of which are plug and play and give better low end torque than the S&S.

Furthermore, the gear driven cams will extend the life of your engine. It has been pretty well documented that the cam chain tensioner shoes give out somewhere around 25k+ miles. When I installed my gear driven cams, my engine had about 25k miles. The tensioner shoes showed a lot of wear and tear - especially the rear shoe.

If you are looking for mild mods to obtain more power, I would look at gear driven cams (plug and play), a decent intake, and a good exhaust.

 

I have V & H longshots on the bike, I ThunderSlide kit in Carb, just orderd as S&S Air cleaner, been thinking of switching cab not sure.

 

I am not a motorcycle mechanic by any means (Mustangs are a different story ), but I have heard people getting better throttle response with the Mikuni carbs.
If you are really looking for performance enhancements, you are probably going to have to go into the engine somewhat. The cams are not a big deal. If you want even greater potential, look at the 98" upgrade and ported heads.

I also installed the gear drive & 510 cams in my Ultra. I want to wear out what I paid for so I didn't want to do major motor work on a brand new engine. It made a huge difference. I wanted a little more power for the hills while pulling the trailer I just bought. I would recommend this for a reasonable amount of money, with a significant addition of power. I don't know squat about carb options. Hope this helps, Gene
