I have a new 2012 Deluxe, and I am experiencing the same problem. It sounds as if the heat shields are pinging. I tightened the clamps and even pulled the clamp "tails" away so they wouldn't rattle against anything. Still happens. It's a high pitched pinging sound like a washer rattling around somewhere. It's at it's worst when going real slow in 1st gear at about 1100 RPM, and then I give it some gas. When the engine lugs it shows up.. It's driving me crazy. I'm taking the bike in on Wednesday for some work. I'm going to ask em to try and locate the problem.

Try using premium gas before you take it to the shop, it sound like pre-ignition knock to me...
I had to install foam on the inside of my headlight visor. I could tap just the visor and it would rattle and could only replicate it by going over a RR crossing. My '12 Deluxe has a plastic rear fender liner which I'd believe they installed now because the metal is so thin that it wiggles and I can still hear it rattle.
I hope that helps cuz I just noticed this is a 4yr old thread after posting. lol.

That's exactly what it was. However I DID use premium gas. I'm betting the gas station I used is selling Reg as Premium. Acting on a hunch,I added some octane booster and the problem solved! ( I didn't see your post till afterwards and TY for the info).
The guy at the parts store where I got the octane booster said that if you use one of those gas pumps that has 1 hose for all 3 types of gas and you make the selection, the first 2 gallons or so that ya get is what the previous driver selected cause it was already in the pumping system. That may have been the problem as well.
All I know is, I will be more careful in the future
