How long has Harley-Davidson been using EFI on their motorcycles? I would like to think that it has been long enough that all the bugs have been worked out and that the systems are as reliable as those on automobiles. Is this true?
I read somewhere that HD has been offering EFI since 1999. Yes, I would agree with you... they're reliable. There are many guys I work with who own EFI Harleys. Every one of them loves it.. most tell me they'll never buy a carbed bike again. Most common answer to why they love it is the startups. do the ol roll-check, turn on the fuel and ignition and bam - start it up. Call me crazy, but I love my carbs.
EFI if you are going to leave it stock, or do only a stage 1 or two and leave it alone. If you are going to be constantly changing cams, headwork, and love to tinker, you may want to go with carb.
For me it was easy, EFI. Carbs will be a thing of the past in a year or so on Harleys, so I believe there will be more focus on intakes, tuners and performace products for EFI.
I leave for work at 5 am, I just start and ride, my neighbors appreciate that, my 99 yamaha had to warm up, or it would stumble, and it was tough finding that "spot" the choke would run good in.
I like carb's on harley just because it give's me a old school fill which is hard to find these day's but efi is great if you don't want the head ache of a carb'd bike and you just want to start the bike up and ride.
Actually Efi with the SERT is the way to go if your going to changing alot. Very easy to remap even if you don't dyno every time. Dynoing each time is more acurate but the SERT comes with many premaps to fit the additions and it has a mock dyno right in the programing that some experts say is actually more accurate than many dyno's because it simulates wieght and drag. If your not afraid of a laptop go SERT. Just my opinion.
