I used the Arlen Ness #17-100 lowering kit. It is not that difficult if you have the right equipment. I have a motorcycle lift (not a small scissor lift) that made the job much easier. Honstely, I couldn't imagine doing it with out a lift. You will need to lift the bike up and still be able to get the shocks off. Getting the bolts out of the eye of the shocks was pretty tough becuase they are torked to about 120 lbs.
You will also need a press (to disassemble the shocks). The kit will come with instructions. It only took me and a buddy about an hour and a half from start to finish. Once we finished...the bike was too low (absolutely no suspension). We adjusted the nuts and lifted the bike up to where I have "some" suspension. You will notice a difference in the ride.
The pics of my bike shows it lowered approx. 1 inch (about 1-1/2 inches of clearance between seat and fender). You can lower it more but the lower you go the rougher the ride. Once you have the kit installed, it is easy to raise and lower the bike.
I am hoping that when I install the FXCW seat that it will take up more of the gap and possibly allow me to raise it a little bit more. I don't mind about 1-1/2" of gap betweeen the seat and the fender...I just didn't like the 3-1/2 inches it has at stock height.
Good luck!
