yeah - the instructions says to mount it behind the splash guard. I think I would follow them rather than what someone told you...... JMO.

I had mine mounted behind the splash guard for a while. It was taking a hit on the big bumps. I moved it under the seat with the supplied bucket.

I just installed one on my '05 Deluxe and it fit fine underneith the seat. However, the 2005 models must have a different tray the ECU sits in because I bought my PCIII from FuelMoto and they provided a deeper tray. Without the deeper tray there would be no way the PCIII would fit under the seat. I don't think the deeper tray will fit on any softail later than '05 or '06. I'm not positive about that though. I know the instructions say to put it behind the splash guard but I wouldn't feel comfortable about that location for fear of moisture getting to the unit.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I don't know what HD did, but for '07 and up the "extra" space under the seat went away.

I just put pipes and a pc on my bike. The ecu module itself fits behind the splash guard. mount it with zip ties right where the alarm would be. The ecu connectors all go under the seat. I had to zip the little fuse box between the battery and the oil tank and stuff the connectors under the seat. it was a tight fit but it works.
