If you stay with Green, Purple or other non Red or Blue lights you should be fine with riding with them on. Nothing flashing either, they can ticket you for "impersonating an emergency vehicle"

Some sets are expandable with more strips. Others are fixed. I bought the 6 strip kit and not expandable.
Wish I had a few more strips now.

I always put some lights behind the breather and horn too as these will block some of the light from the tank. These will make a big difference and will light up the lifter blocks and primary.
Generally you can tuck all the wiring in the battery compartment area with no problem. the exception would be on the Springer's and some of the Dyna's, but without a remote control box to have to tuck in there too you should not have any problems.
