Default Slow Jet Size

2003 Night Train with Short Shot Exhaust. Previous owner put exhaust on, Screamin Eagle Stage 1 kit, and changed Slow Jet to #48. I took it into my Harley Dealer this week for starting problems, and they changed the jet to a #45. Good or bad move?

I imagine when you say "starting problems" that it's symptom was "cranked but would not start"-otherwise they were a long way off from the starter! If it is running good, then all is well.

Go with at least a 46, 48 was probably right. Did the 45 fix the starting issue?

A #48 is the norm for a stage 1. I am wondering if they compensated the jet for actually another issue.....

Ok here was the problem. Bike started fine when I first got it out to ride. The problem happened after I would ride for awhile then stop for gas or a break. After the bike sat for 5 to 10 minutes it didn't want to start unless I turned the throttle a lot and pushed start at same time. I also checked the plugs and it was running really rich. They were solid black around the threads. I took it to Harley and told them what it was doing and they said that the carb was probably getting loaded cause of the #48 jet. So thats why they changed it to a #45. I guess they know what they are talking about. I am new to carbuerated bikes. Let me know what you guys think

Dyno jet kits usually come with a 48 slow, so most dealers are used to using it. The 46 is far more appropiate for a simple stage 1.

The PO of my bike had installed a dynojet kit and I was having the same problem. I rebuilt the carb, changed the slow jet to a #46 and the high speed to a #185 and installed a stock emulsion tube. No more problems and the fuel economy is alot better.

Black around the threads isn't unusual. It's the electrodes that are the telling. Black on my plugs meant "lean misfire" (changed to the #48 on both bikes) but now have tan-tipped with black threads & both running great!

I think each bike is different and that is why some get dyno tunes. If it fixed the issue and runs great then it was right.
