Citoriplus, I hear you, cleaning a polished wheel is pain in the butt, the brake dust is another nightmare. The previous owner of my bike didn't take care of the wheels, the brake caliper side is worse, wheel center is covered with brake dust, I have to use chemical to clean it. After this time, I will take good care of them, hopefully I don't have to do the same thing again. I got a deal from a local HD dealer, they have a chromed front solid wheel, clearance sale $430cdn which is not bad, the parts guy said he can order a matching rear wheel and sell the pair for $880, not bad at all. I really have to think about it, now the rear wheel looks dull, I will polish it next week when I change the tires.
That's a good deal for two wheels. I'm kinda glad I have a spoke front wheel, and like it.
I really only have to worry about the rear. I think when it gets near to needing a new rear tire I'm going to start shopping around for someone to chrome the one I have or 'maybe' (if I can find enough loose change in the sofa) see about a nice replacement.
Nice job AUTO128,looks great, I think you should leave the center the way it is too.My 07 FXSTC rear wheel looks great but like Citoriplus says "It's a pain in the *** to keep clean"That's why I was looking for the input on the polishing *****..looking for a faster yet better way to keep that rim nice and shinny for years to come..lol..
The hardest part of the job is to clean the corrosion and dirt, a lot of elbow grease required, once you get a smooth surface, the rest of the sanding is a piece of cake. It doesn't take much as long as the wheel isn't in really bad shape. Give that a shot guys, a total new look.
I got my chrome fatboy rims with bearings and spacers for about $700 for both on ebay. Just gotta be patient and wait till what you wnat comes along. I didn't want to have to get the bearings and spacers swapped or to buy new ones and lo and behold there they were.
Did you already have the tire off, or did you work it with the tire on? I am wanting polish mine also, the previous owner neglected the wheels and they have little black patches on them from brake dust. Yours look great man, nice job.
I just did the rear wheel this morning, learned from yesterday, didn't spend too much time LOL. My friend was riding beside me yesterday, he said the wheel looks even better while it is spinning.
