I have an 07 Custom, but I have ridden older Shovel pre-Dyna's and later EVO Softails. I'm getting a bit too sensitive to the vibrations of the older bikes, but you have to love the way they ride, sound, and go (even if my Stage 1 96 incher will eat them alive).
If I had any reservations about getting an older EVO Softy's its that when they start getting up in age and mileage they can start to develop the infamous "sloptail" feel from the bushings in the swing arm mountings going soft on you.
But its not something that would kill a deal if you find a good one for a good price. Its only an afternoon's worth of work to fix.
Just something to consider when looking at older and or higher mileage EVO Softy's.
