Default EFI fuel line removal question

I'm having to remove the fuel tank to connect some auxiliary lights and was going to purge the line like the instructions say, however, I was speaking to a HD service tech and he says it is not necessary to do so. I would to get an opinion on somebody who's did this before on what your thoughts are on this. Also, after everything is put back together and ready to fire up again, do I need to bleed the line first?

Have taken the tank of my 08 twice and never purged or bled it. No Problem. Except I didn't siphon the tank first. Thought I could just pop the hose off the bottom and let it drain into a can. Big mistake. Gas everywhere

That was my next question. Wasn't sure if I needed to siphon first. Thanks for the heads up. I have a full tank so it could have gotten ugly.

so it's just as simple as siphoning the gas tank first ?

Another way to do it is to pinch off the cross over gas line with a small needle nose vise grip, then get a little piece of gas line from autozone etc for pennies, plug off one end of the new hose, then pull one end of the original hose off and quickly slip on the new little hose thats plugged on one end. you'll end up with two hoses plugged off and now you can lift tank off w/o draining it. If your not comfortable with the plugged lines being left that way after removing the tank you can plug the original back on until ready to reinstall tank.

I've had my tank off numerous times and that's the way I do it.You shouldn't get any gas coming out of the quick connect on the bottom of the tank.It closes off automatically. Then just plug it back in when you reassemble everything and you're good to go.. no bleeding required

First time I took it off I had a buddy to help me and it wasn't quite as bad. Four hands are definitely better than two.

This time I was by myself and tried the recommended 3/8 hose plugged at one end. Only problem was the hose was a bit too big and gas shot out the back and w/o someone to help me screw the clamp down, I just had to grin and bear it until the tank drained via the open end of the other hose.

I didn't have a siphon this time but I'll be sure to have one next time. Tank is easier to play around with empty anyway.

Why take the tank off? Just put a rag over the rocker covers, spray between the tank and rubber isolator (large, wide band of rubber), remove the fuel line, the front tank bolts, the rear and slide it back towards the seat area. You will be able to get to the connectors. If you are just running wire, use a piece of 16 gauge wire to fish it through.
