I have been toying with the idea of repainting my '08 Rocker myself. And yes, I do have some of an art background and have done some paint work before, just not on my HD. Are there any specific things I should do or not do, and what type of paint is HD using to get the "flat" look like on the street bob and such.
Not sure on what type of paint there using, but im sure you can find out. I say go for it, whats the worst thing that can happen. So you have to get it done by a professional, at least you gave it a good effort. Who knows, it may turn out awesome, and guys will be asking you " WHO DID YOUR PAINT".
You can do it especially of you're wanting to paint matte black.. No need to match HD paint unless you just love that very specific matte.. I got a "kit" at the local paint shop for $70.. Is called "HotRod" matte black.. Base coat only.. No need to primer unless you're painting bare metal.. PPD also has a great matte black that's a 2 part base coat/ clear coat.. The clear is actually the matte.. It's more than double the price though.. You don't have to do anything other than take your time and prep everything real well.. With the new paints you can shoot them in your yard and they're dry to the touch in 10 mins.. Get a good HVLP spray gun.. There are good kits on ebay for around $150.. Most will come with 1.8, 1.5, 1.3 and 1.0 needles.. The 8 is for primer, the 5 is for larger areas that need to be blended.. I like the 1.0 for painting tins.. You get very little overspray and you just put on 3-4 light coats with a light sanding in between each.. You get a real nice finish.. I used to paint helicopters, bikes, pwc, certain cars etc but I haven't painted in 15 years til this progect.. I can tell ya things have sure changed and for the better..
WOW! looking good....
did you paint the trees and lower legs or are the powder coated?
what ever you did looks good...
P.S. saw a rocker oil tank on ebay in gloss black, but it is the gloss black you probably better off painting your own....

Thanks for the compliments.. I painted the tins, signals and wheels.. Had the triple tree, risers, forks sliders, swing arm and few other misc parts powder coated.. The swing arm was down in gloss black to make the frame and the other parts were coated in 30% matte.. Kind of a nice tweener color so if I decide to one paint things deep gloss black I can without have to recoat everything..
Thought about painting the oil bag and also looked into just replacing it with a stock C black bag but right now I kind of like the contrast the silver gives it.. I'm about to finish my 103 build and went with black jugs so once I can see how the contrast is then I might go with the black tank.. Hard tellin..
So on a factory paint job, no need to sand down to bare metal? Would I need to use a wet paper in say 800-1200 grit or can I go rougher? I would imagine that the wet 800-1200 could be for in between coats? With the "hot rod" stuff, with it only being the base coat, do you have any problem with it chipping or flaking? What about fading? How do apply the other two part matte paint? Obviously the paint first, but could you have two colors or more with the matte clear over it all?
