Default Help with ape hangers

I have a 2004 fatboy i am putting some 18" psycho chubbys made by wild one on it. my questions is how much longer do the cable need to be. i don't really feel like unhooking all my factory stuff till i have the cable in hand to do the swap. has anyone out there done this. i need to know how much longer the wiring kit and the brake line needs to be also. let me know thanks a ton. not sure if this matters but it is carbed.

I measure all of mine as opposed to using a number thrown at me from the forum. A piece of wire or string will assist you in measuring correctly. Mock the bars up and follow the existing cables with your string/wire. Stretch the string/wire out and measure. You will need to know carb or injected and what carb. Repeat for wires, clutch cable and brake line.

What are you going to do with the wires? Cut them? Remove from the molex connector? Use pre made extensions? Make your own? Cut and splice?

I like to make patch cables. This consists of pulling the original wires out of the molex connector and running them through the bars. I re-install the wires into the molex connector and at this point they usually don't reach the other connector. This is where I add two molex connector ends and the appropriate wires and pins to form a patch cable. This keeps everything plug and play. When possible I try to match the factory wire colors, that isn't always easy. I have picked up old harness' at swap meets just to salvage the color coded wires out of them for such projects.

I concur with puzzled/ I just installed 16" apes on my nighttrain and you have to "mock them up". worked greatt for me. I also patched together the wiring harness. Works real "slick".

In addition to what Puzzled said you can temporarily clamp the new bars in place without unhooking anything from your existing bars to get a better feel and accurate measurement.

I went...54 in. brake
74 in. Clutch
45.5 in. throttle/idle
I have 16's but these would work fine on 18's as well.
