Default Help! Rookie wrencher. Speedo sensor where is it?

My speedo is not working so I have read to check the speedo sensor. I read that is in on top of the tranny but where? Do I unscrew something and wipe it? What and where. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!

The speed sensor on my '05 Heritage Classic is located on the right side and to the rear of the top cover on the transmission. It is fastened to a plate that is held in place with an allen head bolt. The speed detector uses the 4th gear ring as a source of input. I'm not sure if it detects each gear cog or, as in most cases, a magnet imbedded in the gear. After looking at the wiring schematic, I see there are three wires going to the sensor. One is a ground, one is +5 Volts DC from the ICM (PIN 3) and one is the speed signal (PIN 10). I would be careful with this little gem since it uses +5 Volts. A 12 volt short circuit will most likely smoke it or worse yet, back feed into the ICM and smoke it. I haven't read any articles on how to test the thing, but now I'm curious.

+1 on to of the trans, when the sensor goes bad the turn signals wont cancel either and if injected the idle will be low when hot.

Just held in place with one bolt and the pressure of an o-ring. I doubt wiping it will do much good. I've had a few fail and need replacement.

I had one fail. Cost was $65. Very easy R&R once you locate sensor. Good luck!!
