Default changing the brake/clutch levers

i was reading the soft tail service manual and the book says you have to drain the fluids in the transmission, give the clutch cable some slack among other things. is it really that difficult to switch out the levers?? i thought it was just a simple swap.

i think i might be looking at the wrong part of the book, it cant possibly be that difficult

Default change levers

I changed the levers on my heritage and only had to loosen the clutch cable, then redo once lever was changed.Brake was a simple swap took me about 30 minutes total.

that's what i thought but wasn't sure. you loosened the clutch cable by turning the bolt on it right (towards the bottom of the cable)??

You dont drain the trans fluid. At the clutch cable use a 9/16 and a 1/2 inch wrench. Put slack into the cable. Open up the derby cover, unlock the nut with a 11/16 socket. Turn out with a 7/32 allen head to the left. You will now have plenty of slack. Put your lever on. Then turn with a 7/32 allen (clock wise)until you feel resistance. Then back it out 1/2 a turn. Lock down the 11/16 nut. Then Tihten up the clutch cable, leaving 1/8 inch slack at the lever and perch.

i didnt even have to pull the dernby cover. i usually keep my clutch pretty loose though.
when you do the brake side, be careful not to break your stop lamp switch (that is what you will call it to the parts guy when you break it). I prob changed a dozen levers but still managed to f up the switch. the price you pay talking and working.

I only had one issue. the clutch lever had a nylon spacer that would curl up and bend in half when I used the clutch lever. the spacer was there to fill in a space that stops wobble. I went to the hardware store and bought a nylon cable clamp and cut it in half and used it in place of the spacer and it worked great. I think they cut the factory spacer just 1/8in short

On my 08 cross bones, I did the same as fishcop, the clutch lever is the easier of the 2 to change out.
