Default Changed the fork oil today...

So I finally got the elusive 1 3/4" socket at Sears and all else required for this job. The fork oil was quite dirty. I read the instructions which were apparently for an FX model and I was all prepared for the fork caps to shoot off from all the pressure of the springs even with the front end off the ground, but no, that did not happen. It's just a plug on the fl's. I also have the luxury of having a drain plug on each fork which made this job simple.

REMEMBER TO PUT THE DRAIN PLUG'S BACK IN BEFORE FILLING!

I forgot to put the left plug back in and was wondering where all the oil on the ground was emanating from. Good thing I had a bit extra. I don't know what oil was in the forks but I used the SE Heavy. Took around the block and it seemed to feel good. I will be out and about tomorrow to give it a more thorough test. Until then...

I purchased one of these. It has a rubber insert so it won't scratch the Chrome Fork Cap.

According to the manual 12.9 oz's. Momma's measuring cup came in quite handy.

The first time I did mine I was shocked at how crappy the old stuff looked. Especially when I pored the new stuff and saw what it was supposed to look like.
Made a huge difference in handling.

On my Dyna the caps are spring loaded. Surprise!

Took for a little spin today and it seems a bit firmer. Next time I'll opt for the SE race oil which is a bit thicker than the SE heavy oil. All in all feels a bit better than before. I don't think my socket scratched my fork caps, but my bike is "old" and I really don't care either.

Even I would care.

I'll have to get some pics of it for you later. I think it looks fine. Bottom line is that I am too cheap to buy that item. If I was concerned I would put some electrical tape over the fork cap prior to wrenching on it.
