Spitting, Sputtering, & Hiccups
I have an '89 Softail. I took it for a ride yesterday and it started to spit & sputter. I recall it doing that last year, too. It doesn't want to stay running, you have to give it a little more throttle to keep it running. Sometimes when I'm coasting, it "hiccups"-it cuts out and then picks up again. What's involved in a tune up? Can I put a carb cleaner additive in the gas tank? I bought one but don't know if I should use the whole bottle-it states for 21 gallon tank. I changed the carb last season from the stock carb to a CV from a '93.( I had the problem with the old carb also.)

Drill out the mixture screw and give a few turns in either direction until it idles smoothly, assuming that the carb is the issue. Did it start when you put the carb on, or before? You could also clean out your tank and see if that helps. Or, tear down the carb and rebuild it.

Check your electrical too. Make sure your coil is getting 12 V and your battery is good. I have had symptoms like that and found my battery cell tops were not covered in fluid. Thing was only putting out 10 Volts.
