Ijust boughtan '89 FLSTC -my first harley! The guy Ibought it from says it leaksgas from the carb. He said there might be a piece ofdirt sticking in the needle or a jet. I'm assuming it's the original carb because it says Harley Davidson on it. I got it home &I noticed it is leaking gas out of the hosethat is connected tothe bottom of the bowl. It almost looks like a breather hose the way it is hanging down to the bottom of the bike. Is there a breather on the carb? On the Virago I had, on the bottom of the bowl it had a screw that I could turn and a piece that I could hook a hose & drain the gas out of the carb to store it for the winter. But I didn't see a screw on the Harley carb. Any ideas what could be causing it to leak? If I need to take apart the carb to fix the problem, would it be beneficial to get a carb kit for it? And if so, how involved would it be to do that?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Sid
Are you sure the carb has never been apart? You might want to talk to the guy who sold you the bike and see why it's leaking. It could be as simple as a cracked hose, is there a clamp that's missing? Not sure about the hose off the bottom of the carb. If you have a digital camera, a posted pic would help diagnose the problem.
PS. Just because it says HD on the carb, doesn't mean it's original or that it's never been futzed with.
One of the supply lines going to the gas tank was cracked & I replaced the plastic fitting with a brass one. I can get pics tomorrow & post them if that would be helpful. Any other suggestions in the meantime would be appreciated.

I had the same problem on a 90 FXR. I took the carb apart a half dozen times, replaced the needle, talked to mechanics, throroughly cleaned the seat...and it would still leak out the overflow when parked. I finally gave up and just made it a habit to shut off the gas everytime I turned the key off.
