Default 92 FXRS carb issue

I have had this FXR for about a year and a half. In this time I have put in new pistons new cam and new top end gaskets, as well as changing out the gas tank.

I am running a stock cv carb and while the bike is running the carb will drain the gas tank out of the overflow hose on the bottom of the carb. I had a different carb on the bike when I got it (stock cv as well) and it was doing the same thing so I changed out to my current one and it was running fine.

Over winter I didnt get to ride it much so it sat for a couple months. I noticed it started overflowing when I started it up to take it around the block. I had the petcock in the off position when it was stored like always. So far I have taken the carb apart and cleaned it real well. When I did this I did notice that there was a bunch of gunk in the bowl of the carb. I put some sea foam in the tank and let it run through with the gas thinking this might help but nothing.

Any ideas on what is going on here?

The float is stuck or there's gunk between the needle and seat. Pull the bowl and inspect it.

If you have a vacuum Petcock that is why it only does it when running. You can pull a vacuum on the Petcock while it's not running using a clean hose by mouth or mightvac and watch it start to overflow. You should be able to clean the bowl and replace the float needle and be fine. Or your float is bad but unlikely. Might as well check it while it's off.

Thanks for the help guys. I pulled the bowl and everything looked good, had a spare cv so threw that on there and am going to run that for the time being. This weekend I am going to tear down those other carbs and try to figure out what is going on.

A few checkpoints: make sure gas tank is vented properly.
Make sure float has no gas in it ,if it does, has a hole and won't float.
Check proper float setting.
Make sure needle valve is perfect along with the orifice.

So i went out today and it started the problem again with the good carb. How do I check to make sure the tank is vented properly? I have aftermarket gas caps on there and am not sure if it is vented through those or not.

After it is running pop the cap loose and see if there is any vacuum. You can also sitting in the shop with it running have the cap loose or of and see if it overflows. Just use care.

edit: btw Do you have a vacuum hooked to the petcock? These are known to leak and cause strange problems.

its not the gas cap, it's overflowing, not shutting down. If you didn't have vent you could run out of gas in the bowl. You need to check what's already been detailed here, the float and the float needle and bowl gasket.

-Check float height
-Check the float, make sure it actually floats in gas, nothing inside, hold it below the surface in a jar and see if it fills up with gas
-Check your float needle. I would just replace it at this point while your in there, make sure the needle seat is clean, would take a tiny piece of debris to keep it from sealing
-check the seal around the bowl make sure its not leaking.

Something is not stopping the bowl from filling with gas causing it to go into the overflow, the needle should block the flow as soon as the bowl fills up, thats all there is to it.
