hi, I;m new to the forum and am looking for help to fix the fuel guage on my '05 softail deluxe. The needle always stays on full no matter how much is in the tank. The only time the needle moves off full is when I shut off the ignition.
if its a carb replace it with a mini shift guage and use odometer with reserve. but undo center consel and pull out the internals of the tank and take a look and make sure it moves right. its been a while but i think all you need to do it is a 1/2 wrench and a torque 25t if i remember just spay a little break free or liqiud wrench on t bolts and a socket t25 with driver is a big help. also checkk grounds underseat and make sure thats tight. good luck
Hey, welcome to the forum. Don't get to up tight about the fuel gauge. Seriously, most of them do not work properly. I've got the flush mount gauge and cap and I also have to rely on the odometer because those little blue led's are not perfect. I got used to the odometer pretty quick. Mostly everyone on this forum can tell you different opinions and advice. And you know what, it is all true. It's info from biker to biker helping out one another. That's what I like about this forum. Keep logging on and you will get to know it very interesting. Good luck with the fuel gauge. But try also to use the odometer. That there is more accurate than your gauge will be....Ray
I had a similar problem on a '05 Deluxe. The arm on the gas sending unit was hitting the side of the gas tank. Always full when iginition was on and empty after about five minutes with ignition off. Removed the sending unit, bent the arm, now it works fine. If I remember correctly, there are a couple of hose clamps to replace and a gasket? If you do a search, there are threads on this fix. Hope this works for you. You could also have a ground problem?? Do some searches on this forum tons of great information! Also, if you don't have a Harley Service Manual for your bike, get one, definitely handy when working on the bike!
As others have said, I always use the trip meter to determine when to get gas. Regardless of the fact that the gas gauges aren't super accurate, it is nice to have it working to the point that with a glance, you have a rough idea how much gas you have left in your tank.
