I just recently installed a luggage rack on mine as well. I removed the bags and very carefully removed the screws. I never had to mess with the bar on the inside of the fender. Damn near had to take the rest of the bike apart but the bars inside the fender remained in place. LOL

JR Ryder, it was very nice of you disassemble your rear fender and struts so that ladyhog could see how everything goes together!!

I just did this yesterday on my '09 Heritage.

1. Remove the saddlebags
2. Loosen the #45 Torx screw at the rear of the bar on each side
3. Remove the two saddlebag bolts on each side
4. The sissybar will now rotate forward, giving you access to the two lower #35 Torx screws.
5. Remove the 4 #30 Torx screws, and remove the Sissy bar
6. Install the rack, and re-assemble using the new screws provided. *note* instructions state to use RED locktite. I disagree. Blue is good, because you might want to take the rack off at sometime during your life!

Also -- I put a towel over the rear fender because even when the sissybar tilted, access to the lower screws is tight and the ratchet is very close to fender -- too close for comfort for me. I used a small 1/4" drive ratchet with short extension. Just fyi...
Hope this helps -- Ride safe!
