Default Softail bobtail fender

Hey folks,

Can someone do me a favor and measure the inside and outside width of a softail bobtail fender on any model up to 2002? The fender i'm inquiring about would have been on the softail customs.

Thanks.

I should clarify....I was asking for an inside and outside width at the taillight, not near the swingarm.

I have a 2000 model Night Train. Trying to measure at the bottom of fender under the tail light. Best I could get was 7 1/16" inside to inside. 7 5/16" out side to out side. Hope that helps.

Robert

Well, it is kind of cool. Trying to do something with the taillight on my 07 dyna wide glide. Want something with built in turn signals so I can do away with the exterior ones so I can run some good sized bags when needed.

I have a light that has built in turn signals. Just having a major problem finding a bracket that will work.

The measurement you gave me is almost the same as my bobtail fender on my 07. I found a very nice bracket (nice and pricey too) from jokermachine.com but they don't list it as fitting late model Dynas. Moreorless only show it fitting up to 02 softail. When I did research, up to 05 had a 150 so that told me fender was gonna be close to the same width as mine with a 160. My thinking is the bracket should fit based on research and what y'all told me it actually measured.

Glad I could help. I was thinking about ordering one like this myself:

Exile Cycles makes a cool bracket and kit kinda like this one too.

I've looked at that also. I have that bracket. Found it at a swap meet for $10. It's a bit too narrow for my application. Was gonna cut and weld it to make it work but one problem. I don't know how to weld. lol No time like the present to learn.

I don't know....I like the bracket from jokermachine. It's pretty beefy and compact but damn expensive. $150+ JUST for the bracket. Doesn't make sense to me that it's chrome. It's going to be hidden. I'd rather have it just flat black.

Bobtail fenders leave you with very limited options as far as tail lights and such. Well, I'm limited with a Dyna. Softail guys have it MUCH easier searching for parts. Not whining, just sayin.

I did borrow a rear fender to see if I can't make that bracket work. If not, I came up with another option for customizing the taillight. Get rid of it, and install the run/stop/turn module from hd, then slide the license plate up into the fender as far as I can get it. it's a much cheaper mod and I may try it while playing with that bracket. I'd essentially remove one taillight and end up with two.

There is a member from the dyna forum who has that led cateye install. Looks good. Think his was an older model so the bracket fits without any mods to it.

Anyway, thanks again for your help. You softail guys aren't all bad. lol j/k

Ya might want to see if you can get find someone locally who has an older Custom.
Maybe at a local cruise nite, and then compare/measure the fenders when they are parked next to each other. The WG and the Custom fenders only look similar when they are not parked next to each other. When you get them close together you can see they have a very different shape/contour to them. The bracket for a Softail is almost certainly going to require at least some "customizing" to make it fit a Dyna WG properly.
So I would suggest not spending any more than you have to for a bracket that's going to need to be cut/welded/drilled anyway.
Just for grins I suggest you look through Muddpuddle's "Under fifty Bux" thread at the top of the Dyna section.
He made his own LED tailight with integrated turn signals to fit a customized fender on his Dyna.
