be careful getting this accessory!!!!
the dealer frowns on your bike when you go to trade it in. they don't take an official stance on it but they will definitely low ball you on price because of it.
lets get real, you can buy one brand new on ebay for half the price ($200) of what the dealer sells them for ($500) but the big draw is that on ebay they come with 0000 miles. so if you have 55k miles on your bike, you can invest in one and sell you your bike for allot more. simply put I would rather buy a bike that has 3k miles on it that 55k.
with that said if you bought one at the dealer the parts guy comes out with you checks your bikes millage and send that info to Harley. when you get the speedo/tach it has your millage on it. does that matter NO!!!!!!!!! cause the dealer you are trading your bike to will still be suspicious when they see that gauge.
I bought mine on my 01 fatboy at the dealer back in 2002 (pre-ebay) and spoke to 4 dealers and while not admiting it, they said it is frowned apon...
if you are keeping you bike for ever then by all means go ahead and get it it is a great accessory.
wow your a week too late. my dealer had one they ordered for a customer who changed their mind and sold it for $200 even, that was cost. I did not want it because the tach is so small and if they ever started a sound law they may use it to ticket me. some states say the rpm and the db level. without a tach they could not know the rpm. also dont want to ride watching the tach instead of the road. i do have a stock engine so no need for it. oh and the dealer can set the miles on the harley speedo
There are other sources for it besides the local dealer, and the legit one's will preset the odmeter for your current mileage.
I'm not much of a fan of the combo units, I dislike the idea of taking my eye's off the road just to see what the engine is doing. So I opted for a divorced unit mounted on the handlebars where I can see it without taking my eye's off the road.
Its my personal opinion that with the newer electronic fuel injection bikes a tach is more of an add on bling item than a truely functional device.
Us old guys still like them, because we used to really need them to prevent winding the engine up too high.
But the ECM in newer bikes has a built in (and adjustable) rev limiter so a tach isn't quite as necessary as it used to be.
If I had a Fatty I would just use one of the bar clamp mounts with the mini tach and be done with it.
I went back and forth about the Combo unit. In the end I purchased a Mini Tach and mounted it using the Billet Top Riser Clamp mount. Just installed it Saturday and I like it.
