Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the 89 model jackshaft-to-starter coupling and the 1990 and later model coupling. I don't have anything to refer to other than a couple pics online. My repair manual says the 89 model is symmetrical and the 90 and later model is asymmetrical.
my coupling is symmetrical, it looks the same on both ends and the retaining clip looks to be dead center in the coupling, now it may not be, but it looks like it is without measuring it.
I just bought a new starter denso 128000-8220 which is harley 31558-90 equivalent.
It had a 128000-5750 denso starter which is harley 31570-89.
I don't know why it had the 89 model starter on it, I guess someone had it laying around and whoever owned the bike before me replaced it with the 89. My concern now is the the starter-to-jackshaft coupling and if I have the correct coupling. If I don't have the correct coupling what problems am I looking at? Could the jackshaft and pinion not engage the starter ring gear correctly?
thanks

I hate to bump a thread but I'd appreciate it if someone could help me out with this, I'd hate to have to tear it back apart just to replace a coupling.
