I think somewhere between 220-240 is a good starting Temp for your bike. You want that oil bubblin To hot breaks the oil down. Could be wrong but thats what I think.

On the meat thermometer type dip stick my bike runs about 230 -250. I live in the high desert area of Ca and temps are usually between 80 -100 all summer, most of my riding is at speeds of 50 -80 mph and I use Syn 3 and a tuner to help cool it down.

Once in bad traffic on the fwy i was stop and go for about 30 minutes and temps hit 280 - 290 on the dipstick and the engine went into the Heat management Mode and created a miss, cleared up as soon as I got moving again.

thanks for the replys. I use synthetic oil and my area temps average 90+ in the summer. currently Ive got hi flow ac, pipes and h-d download. I know this doesnt seem to be the forum recommended combo but my plugs look fine and the bike runs great. I just wanna get some idea of temps.I would really like to compare temps with some of the guys who are using fuel controllers and dyno tunes. ive considererd buying the powercommander, but my bike runs so well its hard to justify.

I'm in Texas where we've already seen some 90+ days. My 07 Heritage with V&H big shots and a big sucker runs 200 to 225. I have an oil cooler and have been messing with my MasterTune to stay cool.

It hit 250 a couple weeks ago in extreme stop and go traffic and went into the EITMS. With a little help from some others here on the forum I made a few tweaks in my tune and it's all cool now.

Please do not waste your money on that dipstick guage! I did, it worked for a couple of years, died, I changed the battery and discovered that it was not the battery that failed. Called the dealer and was told that this was a re-occuring problem. The stock dipstick has been working fine since. My 2 cents. Chris

If you want an oil temp gauge, get the old fashioned analog gauge. The digitals are cute, but IMHO cost more than they are worth.

As far as oil temps are concerned, 195 to 250 is about normal with the ideal being in the 200 to 225 range.

Any temps over 250 are bad and should be avoided if at all possible. Synthetic oils can handle high temps much better and do a better job of cooling the engine far longer than standard dyno oils.

But the additives in the oil you need to protect the metal parts from the corrosive chemicals created by the combustion process are the same for both and they go south at a substantually higher rate as the temps go over 250 degree's.

Temps higher than 275 will nearly halve their life expectancey and should be cause for both concern and an oil change.
