Does anyone know what the hole just aft of the rear cylinder at the split line of the crankcase is. It is about 1/8" wide 1/2"long and I can stick a tonge depressor about 3/4" deep into it. The reason I ask is that I am getting oil weaping out of it. It is a 08' Heritage Classic with 14k on the odo. Took it to the dealer yesterday and the tech said they will have to pull the motor tear it down split the case and reseal. I was so shocked I forgot to ask what the hole is for. I noticed the A motors do not have this only the balanced motors. I was thinking I could fill this hole with sealer but do not know what it is or what it does. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It's a place to pop in a tool that looks like a screwdriver when you split the case. Nothing magical about it. You can wash the area with alcohol and blow it clean until no oil is detected. Now either a wicking grade loctite can be poured in there about half full and let it sit for a couple of hours. Then q tip out the remaining loctite. Heat the area up until warm to touch with a hair dryer, or if you got big ***** a heat gun on low, but don't fry the powder coat. It will seep into any area that the original sealant lacking and fill it. If you don't feel comfy with that process, clean it as above and cap the hole with black rtv. Sensor safe grade of course. If you take it to the dealer, they might fix it right, but look at all the fasteners they will mark up or things that get scratched in the process. This area is a common problem for seapage. For what it's worth I did mine with loctite, and no further seapage in a year. Both methods will work as long as you go to great lengths to remove all trace oil. Can't stress that enough.

Ron, I'm having the same issue on my 09 Fatboy. Could you tell me what was the exact model of locktite that you used (290 threadlocker, etc.)? I am seeing many different wicking types but not sure which one to use. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks.

290 is more than up to the task. I need to point out that I've had tons of experience doing this kind of thing so your results may vary but done right it works. The slightest trace of oil and it won't wick. Lot's of alcohol and cleanliness.

Hey guys, I'm not an expert, but I just had the same issue and once they got mine apart they said the case was 'scarred' and needed a new case, not just 'resealed'.. If it were me, I'd let it get fixed right. Their is another thread about this hear that I just posted on. It's titled 07 fatboy (oil leak). I'd check that one out before I did anything with locktight. But thats just me..
I did the procrdure recomended by Ron. Did 50mi on it today and it was as dry as the Mojve Desert in July. The big test is coming up, this Saturday the 16. Riding from Carrollton GA to Key West FL with a overnight stop in Daytona. I Nominate RON as a full fledged GURU.

Glad to hear it worked out.. As I just heard from my dealership that HD told them to put the scarred case back together instead of putting a new case on.. I may have to use Ron's method as well since HD seems to think a scarred case is 'good enough'.. I may just be disgruntel and if it leaks again take it back to get it re-sealed again.
Jetdoctor, how did you clean off the oil? I tried the rubbing alcohol but still see traces. Ron says that if there is any oil left it will not work. Did you clean inside the crevice? What did you use? Did you use the loctite 290? Sorry for all of the questions, but a detailed step by step would be very helpful and pictures would be better....I am a bit nervous about this! Thanks.

Sorry I took so long to reply to your question. Just got home yesterday. First used denatured alcohol from home depot (I buy this stuff by the gallon) and Q-tips, but had to wack the Q-tips with a hammer to make them skinny enough to get down in the hole. Cleaned out the hole till there was no more black on the Q-tip, then used alcohol in a spray bottle to get a good spray in the hole followed by blowing out the hole with shop air. Repeated this several times to make sure all the oil was gone. Then used Ron's procedure with Locktite 290. Just got back from Key West (2200 mi) dry as a bone.
