Doing my first mod on a 08 fatboy. Longshots, A/C and a harley file. Now, whats up with that file is it worthless? my dealer didnt mention anything about it being bad but i also dont want to get something that will ruin the bike. i also have a budget of 1k which that is what everything is coming out to with install. any help would be great .
Should i go with the file i think its like 100$ or is it safe to run without that file? thanks guys
The "file" is needed if you install a high flow A/C. You should be fine without it if you just run pipes for now, then you can save some dough and buy some type of fuel management for your bike then install the high flow A/C.
My bike had that kind of a setup when I bought it used. I still had a fair amount of popping on heavy decel. I ended finding a used power commander on ebay for a steal of a price and putting that on. Once programmed properly it took care of all my problems. Should you get the stage 1 download? If it were me I'd get some sort of tuner instead, but that will put you over 1000. Hard to say. Maybe just put the pipes on until you can get a tuner too, and then swap the air box and add the tuner.
I got a Power Commander III from Fuel Moto (one of HDF sponsors) for around $240 - and it came with the correct map (for my bike, pipes, A/C) already loaded. took about 20 minutes to install.... and no pinging, no pops, just runs great!
FatBoy777, you opened up a can of worms on this topic. I would do a little research about HD download versus a fuel mgt system. Personally I would go with fuel mgt, and in my opinion, software tuning is a better approach versus adding more hardware to the bike (especially piggyback systems)... My take is that you are putting another point of failure on the bike. With software, just plugin laptop, tune, and unplug laptop. Whether you do it yourself or have a tuner do it for you, get excellent results..
but, really, do some research and get smart or HD will takes your money and run.
cool thanks guys. i just had a budget of 1k. the only reason i did not go with just the pipes is that the dealer said it would run lean. i just want a good sound i care little about power right now.

I told my Old lady that same line....
Pushing $3500 spent on my motor and still aint done.
Its all fun and games til some old crusty dude on a built motor geezer glide passes you like yer' standing still getting the Hwy and rapidly dissapears into the sunset as you wonder why your badass new bike cant keep up!!
For real. Those old crusty dudes are always out on the prowl trying to show off their monster builds on Hwy onramp across our fine country...
Maybe I'm a secret old crusty dude as I have been stalking stockers lately??
Future mods??= May as well buy some form of fuel management now and get it over with.
