May/June 1983 I was on I 10 between El Paso and San Antonio, TX. I was being passed by a Semi and heard the pop as what appeared to be a rather large rock or chunck of concrete flew from one of the trailer tires. It hit me just above the left eye and snapped my head backwards. No idea how I stayed on the bike let alone kept the bike upright. Even though I was wearing a skid lid my head hurt!
That was the last time I rode with out a DOT helmet and facesheild! Prior to that I wore the cheapest one I could find. I was in the Army back then and we were required to wear a helmet at all times.
Several years ago a dump truck going the other way on a 2 lane road, rock bounced 1 time drilled me in the left eye, I had cheap sunglasses on they shattered. Lucky for me I saw it coming and was able to close my eye, pulled over my wife picked the glass out of my eye lid, eye swelled pretty bad no serious damage. Never wore cheap sunglasses again.
lots of rocks. Usually just an inconvenience unless they hit my paint then they really suck. Lots of bugs. Usually just an inconvenience unless they hit my paint then they really suck. A couple of birds. Usually just an inconvenience unless they hit my paint then they really suck. A dinner plate size chunk of 18 wheeler tire. Just really sucked.
I have been been worried about this as well being that I just got my fatbay about 6 weeks ago, and the funny thing is that I was drving my truck a few days ago with the window down and a huge rock came flying through the wondow and hit my arm....hurt like hell!! So it just goes to show even in a car you are in danger!!
I've got one to beat all of you. Me and the wife where out riding last year and went by a golf course and yes you guessed it some golfer eather on purpose or accidently shoot a ball of the green and nailed me right in the leg. I don't know how fast the ball was going but I was doing 60 so I figure I was hit with it at about 120 (figure the speed of the ball + my speed) I kept control and pulled off couldn't see any golfer so held my composure and headed home at home there was a welt about 10" around and stuck out 2" and BLACK as the ace of spades. Couldn't hardly walk on it for a week. Never went by there again. Infact havn't golfed since then eather.
Happens lots when travelling. There is always crap on the road, not to mention big bugs. Dragonflys are the worst at hwy speed. I ususally keep my windshield on for this very reason, and I always wear leather gloves cause I've been dinged on the knuckles (of all places)...and man that smarts!
The whole animal thing would be an interesting corollary to this thread. I'll bet that there are some of you that have some good stories along this line too. Feel free to share.
Caught a grasshopper in the middle of my forehead when I was 18. I grew up in Iowa, no helmet law, and was riding my Yamaha out to work. Running late as usual and was doing about 65mph and SMACK!!! I was so stunned that I had to pull off on the gravel shoulder and take a minute. When I wipped my forehead with my hand, all I could feel was goo. The reason I know it was a grasshopper is because I later found one its back legs in my hair.
