I would agree you are holding on too tight. However, I also agree your riding position could be causing you to be uncomfortable, thus, causing your tight grip. Sounds like an excellent excuse to buy new bars, grips and seat.
I know this sounds F'ed up ,if all else fails try anti vibe gloves for jack hammer users. We have been providing them for our laborers lately and they seem to make a huge difference.
These worked for me they are a little cheaper than grips and a little more than a cramp buster. the gel in the palms works real well on long trips....but hey just my .02 cents worth and besides some people are too cool for gloves....
I've been thinking about bringing my handlebars forward or up to see if this helps. I too sometimes have the same problem with my right hand going numb. Seems that if a lower seat can improve on this, raising the bars up or forward may have the same result. I guess I'll soon see.
I had the same thing, it is the condition called Tennis elbow (medial lateralsomething or other)
It comes from doing repetitive things involving bending your elbow (what is your job?) ...the muscle in front of your elbow on the outside..if you press your finger in there, is it a little sore?
what to do to help:
make sure your arm is not all folded up under you when you sleep, any bending squeezes the nerve. wrap your elbow in a towel to splint it for a little while if necessary. And I might add, it is a very sexy way to go to bed! haha! Can you say Michelin Man?
ice on the elbow as often as possible for a couple weeks
ibuprofen, 2-3 every 4 hours for a couple weeks.
I had expensive PT to help mine, it got pretty bad, but those were the DIY therapies. Really helped too.
I use ISO grips with their rocker, it helps tremendously.
The interesting though, when I ride, my hand eases up because my elbow is fairly straight, giving the muscle/nerve a chance to relax. So do what everyone says and get the rocker so that you can unwrap your fingers to take breaks.
