Default Helmet question?

I want to buy a helmet (for travelling to "helmet law" states). I've tried on HD 1/2 helmets and didn't like the look. My wife was in tears and called me mushroom head for days (I thought I looked more like a giant walking *****.

Are any of you familiar with nexl sports helmets? I also found helmets on the arlen ness website that I like. Both appear to not have a very thick padding on the inside. The website says that both are "DOT Approved". Is that all that is required to make me legal?

Or am I going to make Johnny Law happy when he sees me with what appears to be a novelty lid?

Received a DOT apprv'd hemlet I bought @ carbonfiberhelmets.com earlier this week...I've ridden about 100mi w/ it - I have only good things to say about it 'cept:

1. The strap snap is difficult to engage. (A small thing that I'll probably get used to), and,
b) The price is kinda steep...$185 + shipping...

I recommend it, though...It's lightweight and solid-ly built....And it reduces the *****-look quite a bit. (Not sure about anyone else, but I consider that a 'plus')...

I have a sense that those of us who live in Calif will begin to face helmet scruitiny from CHP and local po-po in the near future...Stories of mass ticketing on the Ca side of the Nev/Ca border during Laughlin run are makin me think that DOT cert will become a *real* requirement soon...

Lots of folks buying that ACC carbon fiber helmet. Thats some serious change to toss out if you are only going to wear it out of state (unless you travel a lot)....if you are just looking to satisfy the helmet law...buy something cheap..

the Vega XTS is nice looking with a leather cover for about $50..its small and its DOT...they also have one in carbon fiber for a few $$ more

myself i would go with a DOT sticker put it on a novilty helmet. helmets are law here but most cops don`t know what makes a lid DOT or not. really i find the lesser padding makes it fit much better. with the real DOT 1/2 lids i got not sure if it would stay on in a crash. we had a sportbiker go 1 on 1 with a dumptruck here today. didn`t go well for the biker..R.I.P

Agree with HarleyWood on The Vega XTS helmet . A buddy of mine has the NEXL helmet and it looks the same size as my Vega , although the side profile is somewhat different than normal on the NEXL . When I bought my Vega I did so online and figured if it did not fit right no great loss at $50 where as the NEXL was 4X that price , too much money for hit and miss , I could not find one locally . My Vega , my regular size fit perfectly with no ride up .

The idea that these helmets are expensive is funny. I'm originally from a sportbike background where the bikes are 7-10K and it's not uncommon for a kid to buy to buy 1000 dollar leathers or a 400 dollar helmet. Most of these helmets are expensive just because of the flashy graphics on them or which racer boy wears them. But here in Harley world we are talking 20K bikes mostly adults and people think a 1000 chrome job is great but a 200 helmet is expensive... Thats a riot. If the helmet is DOT approved, will save your a$$ is a crash maybe and looks half decient I would not even balk at the price......200 bucks? bargan.

I'm not worried about the price. I could care less. The only reason I need a helmet is because of the dumba** lawmakers who say I have to wear one when I'm in their state. [:@]
