Can a Train be too black?
When I was a kid, I can remember seeing a big old Lincoln, that wet road, black as night color with the chrome trim on the doors, and chrome grill, and fender-well covers with chrome trim, anyway, you get the picture.
Fast forward about forty years, and I'm standing in Savannah's HD glitterdome, on a mission to purchase a new Street Bob. But they didn't have one in black. So the salesman says, "Have you looked at a NightTrain? We have one in black."
The rest, gentlemen, is history. This week I painted the heat shields black, and I'm wondering if I can keep my front end shiny. The bride says, "Leave it like that!", but I feel the tug. Point being, a little chrome on a black Train is a good thing. To me, everything blacked out looks industrial.
I like the 1958 Lincoln Continental look.

I have considered yanking my Chrome axle covers, swingarm inserts, pulley cover, swingarm bolt covers but I like the chrome trim stuff and since I'm sportin' a monsterous 9" schnozzola of a headlight?
The chrome bits and pieces stay.
I did just powdercoat my brake and shift levers, and a set of lower fork sliders and a new set of bars 80% semi gloss black, and had just my AC snorkel powdered wrinklecoat to match the valve covers.
But yeah....I'm with Bob. Gots to have a lil' bling with the black. Love that Lincoln Bob.
But other than that, it's great. It looks fantastic, and makes a real difference in the way the front end goes into a corner. It's still no Ninja, but it's a ton better than the floppy FX front end.
I changed my rocker boxes and timing cover because I had some chrome on the pipes that where all by them selves.
but if you have all black including black pipes you are good...the problem is that people see chrome as status symbol.and black as stock. but that is changing rapidly....
black is the new chrome!!!!
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
Just left the crotch rocket scene for my first Harley and picked up a Night Train. I am looking to get rid of some of the chrome myself and complete it with a nice blacked out look. Good advise and images.
