I thought the detachable windshields were suppose to be so easy to take on and off mine is a pain in the *** it is so hard to get into those rubber gromets should they be all the way in there if any pics let me see please I got it in there but not so easy this sucks
Mine is simple really,
Are you sure your mounts are in the right place ? can you move them ?
Mine is mounted on a 41mm wide glide forks and it is a snap.
Did you install it yourself. Maybe washers in wrong place. We have a single washer on the inside and then the grommet. No problem with ours. As long as the spring clip is over the stud on the outside, the shield should be seated properly.

Sounds like you have the wrong shield. The one for aux lights is a little wider than the one for no aux lights. They are just different enough to seem like it would work but, they do not quite match up right with the grommets nor stay on all the way... If you have to squeeze the shield or bend it out, depending which setup you are mixing and matching, to get it to line up with the grommets, you have the wrong one... Ask me how I know I am using a non aux shield with aux lights. I mounted the upper rubber grommets inside the aux light mounting bracket between the bracket and forks with some spacers and am not using the lower grommets. The lower shield bracket slips right onto the lower bolt between the aux light bracket and forks. I added some tape to the lower portion of the shield bracket so it would not rattle around or scratch anything.

I had the same problem till I started putting silicon spray on the grommets. Now it pops off easily...still a bit hard to get it lined up putting it on though.
I am a little late to the game but was going to offer the suggestion of vaseline on the grommets, or a dab of grease. I got rid of my windshield a long time ago, but I am sure a day will come when I want one again. You know what the old adage says. Practice makes perfect, that is assuming it is all on correctly.
