Many of you may have newer bikes (with newer saddlebags) but I just replaced my 15 year old bags with new ones which include the Easy Brackets. I gave the folks where I purchased them the stats of my bike and backrest for proper hardware. I like the way they mount and the aesthetics aren't bad either but on my first ride with the bags on, as soon I went over a RR crossing I heard a knock. By the time I got home I had a 3 inch rip in the seam where the leather is sewn onto the backing of the bag from the bags hitting the axle. Needless to say after just spending $500+ on new bags, I was a bit aggitated. I'm fairly certain I will be able to send the bag back for replacement/rework but I'm wondering about the hardware or spacing of the Easy brackets from the bike.
If you have Easy brackets on your bike, how far away do the brackets sit from the fender strut? (mine sit almost tight to the strut with the bags mounted)
I've got a fix of my own in mind but if it can be solved by changing the mounting hardware alone, that would be the logical fix.
I feel your pain Soulman. Not sure these will help but here are a couple of pics of hardbags with Easy Brackets on my Deluxe. I'm pretty sure the EB part number is the same. I used to get knocks with the permanent brackets that came with the bags. But I don't get any knocks since I switched over to Easy Brackets.
I had them on my Fat Boy, but I took the bags and brackets to a guy near where I live called "Alligator Bobs", who specializes in seats and other leatherwork. He installed a piece of plexiglass on the bracket side of each of my bags, this gave both bags more structural integrity. They never sagged "into" the bike and it was the best 50.00 I think I spent on that bike.
My EZ brackets are mounted along with the quick detach sissy bar mount so they sit maybe an inch out further from the struts than yours. Even if they sat an inch closer, they would not scrape the axle. I think JeffG is right. My bags are pretty stiff on the side that mounts to the EZ bracket so not much flex. I have read others also using plexy glass to stiffen up bags.
