Default Considering a Trade...Need Input

I'm thinking of trading in my 2005 Ultra Classic on a 2008 Softail Custom with 4K miles. I prefer the styling and lighter weight of the Custom over the Ultra. Also, the Softail has the TC96 motor. If you've ever moved from a bagger to a Softail, I'd like to know your thoughts. Any regrets?

Honestly, I would trade or sell your bike and look for a 2002 Softail custom fuel injected model with low miles. 2002 is the best built TC year. Reasons being:

A. Last year with the heavy duty timken crank bearing

B. Last year with a FORGED crank

C. First year with the new Delphi FI ECM

D. one of the last years with the older style 5 speed transmission which is far and away superior the newer 6 speed "cruisedrive" transmissions.

The newer built bikes I think are inferior, too many places the moco is cutting corners on em. Not a fan of the new "TC96's" and their respective transmissions at all.................

You can grab a mint condition 02' for less than you sell your bike for, take the money saved and put it back into the bike.

I sold my Roadking and bought a Fatboy last year. Never regretted it once. Fatboy easier to handle and in my opinion more comfortable to ride.

Thats a pretty negative (and somewhat inflammatory) claim.
I'd be interested in hearing the source of your info here.
If its just your unsubstantiated opinion, then you shouldn't be posting it without stating this is an opinion.
Especially since you haven't been posting here for very long.

In what way is the 6 speed transmission inferior?

In what ways are the newer bikes in general inferior?

I went from a 2005 Road King Custome to a 2005 Anniv FatBoy and am very happy with the decision. I dont do a lot of long rides more than a couple hundred miles a day. Daily commute is 130 miles RT and I do it 2 or 3 times a week on the bike, so most of my riding is around town or in the mountains around where I live so the fatty suits me better . I do have bags and a fairing for it when I go longer or bad weather but most of the time they are off.

Overall I thingk the RK out handled my FatBoy both on the Fwy (smoother ride) and around town ( a little more crisp / responsive in the corners) but the FatBoy is more fun, I feel like I sit more into it, I like the look of the softail better .

I may get another Touring Model but I dont think Ill sell the FatBoy

Day-Um....There goes that derned new guy Gunner "Riling" up the natives again.

Gunner. You have a knack for stirring up Poop! If you havent realized by now the majority of our team Softail members here are on the newer model bikes. They could give two shats about this bearing or that bearing or some old tranny being assumed better by you. These Gents will most certainly take offense to having their 96"ers slammed on.

Suppose I'll sit back and watch the show unfold.

Get the 200mm rear tire on the '08.........'02 is the skinny back tire. Not saying one is better than the other, but the difference is there for those that care. I do.........

I've been happy with my 6 speed.......no noise no worries.
'08 has the automatic primary tensioner......'02 does not....

there are lots more differences......those just came to mind

Its negative because its a fact. I've torn down and worked on countless twin cam engines, transmissions etc from all years. The older 5 speed transmission has been a bullitproof mainstay design for years. It uses harder grade straight cut gears that is more efficient(99%) at transferring power to the rear wheen and there are no axial loads on the shafts or bearings and case itself causing excessive wear and tear like the new transmissions. I may have not been posting here long, but I've been a master mechanic for 15 plus years. I do know a thing or 2 about things that run on 2 and 3 wheels.

You question my "opinion" on the 6 speed tranny, so why not on the crankshaft, timken bearing etc? Harley has been cost cutting the design and mfg. of the TC platform since 02' as it is the the expensive piece on the bike to produce. The new transmission itself costs them literally half as much to mfg. over the older 5 speed. That translates into alot more revenue for the Moco in itself when you account for how many TC's they make per year. Do the math.
