I'm finishing up a rather large mod on my '09 Rocker and we're having a little problem matching paint for the rear fender. My bike is the Red Sunglow and the paint looks good on the test sheets, but when we paint the fender it keeps coming out darker. In bright sunlight it's pretty close, but when you move into the shade it looks much darker. I've been told that Harley uses a black base coat (primer), but we are considering painting it over white to try and lighten up the paint. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you all for the replys... I made my original post from my laptop and my battery was about to die so I posted very quickly...
So, here's the scenario in more detail... The paint seems to be the right mix, and like I said before it looks very good in direct sunlight, but when you take it away from direct sunlight (i.e. in a garage), the paint goes a shade or two darker.
It is my understanding that all stock fenders are made black and the paint scheme is applied on top of that. Is that correct?
The paint shade (Red Sunglow) has a lot of different color flakes and I'm wondering if they even put some flakes in the clearcoat. I'm also wondering if we try to start with a white primer coat it might lighten the overall appearance when taken out of direct sunlight.
Has anyone had any direct experience with this issue?
The guy doing my mods is very experienced. He worked for Harley for several years and now has his own shop. He's not a hack and I have a lot of confidense in him. He is also using a very highly qualified custom paint shop to do the fender.
I know this paint scheme is new for Harley (the last few years), and didn't know if anyone has had much experience with these issues.
I really think the problem is in the base (primer) coat or the clear coat. I had a similar problem matching paint on a car years ago and the issue was a tint in the clearcoat.
So, we are retaining enough (extra) paint to do the front fender and tank at a later date. So, if the match isn't absolutely "perfect" in all shades of light, I will just paint the rest on the next mod (which will include a new front fender and custom graphics tank) this winter.
Anyway, I'm open to suggestions, comments, ideas, etc...
